Penny Pearl has a nose for news and a knack for finding trouble – not that she means to. As Clover Heights’ top investigative journalist (okay, their only one), she’s always chasing a headline. But when a late-night trip back to the office for a forgotten folder lands her smack in the middle of a crime scene, things go from curious to criminal – fast.
Enter Colt Davenport, the town’s newest detective, barely unpacked and already on his first big case: a suspicious fire at the beloved James Dee Hopkins Public Library. So, when he spots a shadowy figure sneaking down Main Street after midnight, his instincts kick in. Unfortunately for Colt, Penny’s instincts do, too.
Now Penny’s sitting in a jail cell, the library is in ashes and the local businesses are falling victim to vandalism. The town is buzzing with questions, and the loudest voices are coming from Penny’s three matchmaking aunts, the eccentric owners of The Cackle & Talk Coffee Shop, where the coffee’s hot and the gossips even hotter.
With half the town under suspicion and everyone pointing fingers, it’s up to Penny and Colt to untangle the clues, catch the culprits, and maybe -- just maybe – learn to trust each other along the way.
Because in Clover Heights, secrets don’t stay buried, but they do make for a great front-page story.
